I think this probably had lot to do with it as well:

"For South Africa it is simply an opportunity to begin again, though their next Test will be in December. By then, it's likely that former captain Dean Elgar will have retired. Weird. Removing someone who is doing well

Not really, SA lost the last two series against England and Australia under his captaincy. His captaincy record, 8 won and lost 6. His batting had also gone down lately.

Tbf, winning away in Bazballing England and Australia with an ineperienced batting outfit is very tough. I think he did an acceptable job and as well as any would expect. Defended against India at home which was very tough. But with the lack of fight in Australia and poor showing from Elgar himsef like you said, I think some level of drastic change was required. So in conclusion, I feel that Elgar was kinda made a scapegoat but eh, I dont think its completely unfair.
