Cricbuzz Rajasthan Royals owners acquire Barbados team in CPL July 31,2021 Sangakkara and Co. will now have a big presence in the CPL as well Barbados Tridents, the two-time Caribbean Premier League Champions, will now be called Barbados Royals after the Royals Sports Group (EM Sporting Holdings Ltd) - owners of Rajasthan Royals - acquired a majority stake in the franchise. Barbados Royals are the third team in the CPL whose owners also have stakes in the IPL, with Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks being the other two teams. The Barbados team first won the CPL in 2014 under the captaincy of Kieron Pollard while they were also champions in 2019 under Jason Holder's leadership. Holder will continue to lead the team in 2021 and will have the assistance of Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket for Rajasthan Royals, who will play a similar role with Barbados Royals. "Barbados Royals will be an important part of the Royals' cricket ecosystem. With a fantastic talent pool of local players, we have the opportunity to innovate and develop strategies that will benefit the Royals Group. We are also excited at the prospect of how we can promote growth in the game of cricket," Sangakkara said. Speaking about their latest acquisition, Manoj Badale, Royals Sports Group Chairperson and the Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals, said: "We are delighted to have signed this deal with Manish Patel, to acquire a majority stake in the Barbados CPL franchise. We are extremely grateful to the Barbados government for their continued support, and we look forward to making a positive impact on both cricket and tourism for the country. We have ambitious plans for the Royals brand globally, and this is an important strategic step." The 2021 season of the CPL will be held from August 26 to September 15, with all the matches to be played in St Kitts.
