When we were kids school cricket used to be immensely popular in Kandy, so much so that the days Murali played shopkeepers used to close their shops and come to our school grounds on Friday evenings to catch some action. And as kids we definitely went and sometimes stayed the whole of Saturday to watch. And our principal was a cool cat too, he actually sometimes let ALL the students off after lunch break at 12:30 to go and watch the matches, and even funnier is very few kids if at all left, they all stayed and watched matches.
From the early days, I remember watching our own Kalpage, Murali, Sajith Fernando, Piyal Wijethunga etc play. Those are some of the earliest memories.
From visiting schools, back in the day Marvan, Vaas, and Dharme were very popular throughout the island and we knew those names. I remember watching all 3 of them, Marvan scored a 100 against Murali one year at our ground. That was brutal actually lol, he totally had one better on Murali that day. On the other hand I remember one match where Vaasy got a beating; we needed 70 odd runs in 7 or 8 overs to win the match, and Sajith Fernando and his opening partner smashed them to get the 70 in like 5 overs. The Big Match that year was a disaster for Trinity; in Murali's last year our captain was Nuwan Kalpage, the other Kalpage's bro. We batted first and scored 250 or so, Nuwan got a 100. Then Murali set to work; Trinity first innings 98 all out and 2nd innings 54 all out. LOL the match was over before lunch on 2nd day.
Later on I remember Mahela scoring a 100 at our ground too, he was just as classy back then. I have no recollection of Samare or even knowing his name back then. I've seen Sanga bat too, he was kinda famoust, but he got out cheaply in the Big Match his year. I think I've also seen Avishka bat. Much later in his final year and as captain Kaushalya Weeraratne scored a 100 in the Big Match, that was at Asgiriya.
Absolute classic this piece <3
