SLC to take a decision depending on the outcome of today's court case
Looks to scrap Club T20 or both ODI and T20 tournament to accommodate provincial One dayers
After spending millions on the launch of SLC Major Tournament on 15 February 2016, the tournament is yet to commence. A Court decision put the tournament on hold, with time which was allocated for the 23 teams to play One day and T20 tournaments also quickly running out.
According to SLC the future of the tournament will be decided on the outcome of the Court hearing today, as presently the Court has halted the tournament following a case filed by Negombo Cricket Club who obtained an enjoining order to suspend the tournament because of their 'unfair' exclusion from it.
President of SLC, Thilanga Sumathipala, who clearly was not happy about the Court drama, said they are at least trying to conduct the One day tournament and then Provincial one day tournament, as the National team's next assignment will be the Champions' Trophy, which is an ODI tournament. But if today's decision doesn't go SLC's way, they will have to make an alternate decision.
"We will discuss with Clubs then and will take steps to start the Inter-provincial One day tournament later in March," said Sumathipala.
Earlier, SLC conducted the Premier League Tier 'A' and Tier 'B' tournament which started in November and ended in February.
Then they were planning to hold One day and T20 tournaments involving all 23 clubs who played in Tier 'A' and 'B' granting them List 'A' title, a move which evoked a great deal of criticism. After that there was a plan to hold inter provincial one day and T20 tournaments, which was anticipated to be more competitive than the club tournament, with performance in the club tournament used as a base to help select players to the provincial squads.
In between, the Sri Lanka National team is taking on Bangladesh, while the 'A' team is playing against England Lions. According to that plan there was going to be non-stop cricket in Sri Lanka till April, where selectors would have plenty of opportunities to check out new talent and skill in both ODIs and T20s, especially to make selections for the Champions Trophy and any future tour; if not for the Court decision.
