SSC have emerged as the new SLC Premier League Tournament Tier ‘A’ champions for the 2016/2017 Inter-Club cricket season.
The team from Maitland Place finished on top of the points table at the conclusion of the Super Eight stage having notched up four successive outright victories.
Their latest triumph over the CCC by 84 runs inside two days at the BRC Grounds in Havelock Park completely sealed the title in their favouras they completed a memorable tournament.
Even then, they had a tough final hurdle to clear as they came under tremendous pressure from the start and things looked very gloomy when they were bowled out for 147 runs in the first innings.
But the SSC fought back magnificently and defended their modest total quite successfully as they went on to snatch a first innings lead of 46 runs.
Dilshan Abeysinghe had a dream start to his First-Class career while claiming three important wickets while veteran spinner Sachitra Senanayake added the finishing touches with a superb four-wicket haul.
However, SSC were still not out of danger as they found run-making even more difficult in the second innings and managed to score just 155 runs despite six of their batsmen entering double figures.
But in a dramatic turn of events CCC folded up for a mere 117 runs in the second innings after they were set a modest victory target of 202.
Overall this match turned out to be a nightmare for the batsmen with a total of 16 wickets falling on the opening day and 24 wickets going down in a sensational second days play.
Chilaw Marians CC v Ragama CC
Ragama CC created a major upset as they brought down the high riding Chilaw Marians CC outfit by seven wickets in their SLC Premier Tournament Tier ‘A’ Super Eight round fixture played at the Colts CC Grounds in Havelock Park.
This success not only lifted Ragama CC to the third place in the final points table but it also shatteredChilaw Marians CC’s hopes of winning the tournament after they had recorded three back-to-back outright victories.
But this time Chilaw Marians CC finally met their waterloo as Ragama CC produced their best performance in the tournament to emerge victorious by a convincing margin.
The young but talented Ragama CC outfit certainly got their act together well from the start and took the initiative by dismissing the strong Chilaw Marians CC batting for just 168 runs.
In fact two of the most noteworthy performances came from young Saminda Fernando and Sahan Nanayakkara who really turned things around with their individual brilliance on the field.
The former, making his First-Class debut hit a top score of 93 in the first innings and then anchored their batting in the second innings while chasing a victory target of 188 runs.
Nineteen-year-old left-arm spinner Nanayakkara also produced his best effort in this game as he took a career best seven for 92 to dismiss Chilaw Marians CC for 295 in the second innings.
NCC vs Army SC
NCC had the satisfaction of completing the Super Eight round on a high note when they defeated Sri Lanka Army Sports Club by 176 runs in their match played at the SSC Grounds in Maitland Place.
NCC played some outstanding cricket to record only their second outright win in the Super Eight round as they managed to finish in the fourth position in the final points table.
The key figure in the NCC team was undoubtedly their consistent run-getter Angelo Perera who once again played a dominant role with the bat in both innings.
Even then his hundred in the second innings was quite a significant effort considering the situation of the game as it helped NCC to extend their overall lead beyond their opponents reach.
NCC were in real danger at one stage after they had collapsed to 90 for four in the second innings and looked like they would surrender to their opponents quite meekly.
However, Perera had different ideas as he almost single handedly carried NCC towards safety with an innings of pure concentration and determination while leaving Army SC a challenging target.
NCC then wrapped up the game with more than a day to spare as Army SC were unable to put up any resistance against the accurate bowling of Lasith Embuldeniya and Chaturanga de Silva.
Colts CC v Tamil Union
Colts CC produced their best performance in the tournament to beat the more fancied Tamil Union outfit by a massive 182 runs in their Premier Tier ‘A’ match worked off at Panagoda.
This was no doubt a huge morale booster for Colts CC considering the fact that Tamil Union had always looked the better side in this competition and at one stage they were even top contenders for the title.
But this time Colts CC were able to turn tables on their opponents with a tremendous batting performance where they piled up a mammoth 411 in their second innings.
This was a superb team effort from Colts CC as they launched a calculated attack on the Tamil Union bowling with the entire top order contributing towards their cause.
As a result the Tamil Union were left with an impossible victory target of 462 runs and they never looked like getting closer to that target as they folded up for 279 against the bowling of Akila Dananjaya and Ishan Jayaratne.
