I can’t believe people are calling these senior players selfish. I would take a minute and put myself in these players’ shoes.
1. Don’t know about you guys, but my job has clearly defined key performance indicators. These are OBJECTIVE measurements of deliverables. There is nothing vague like “future potential”. “Potential” is measured by deliverables and outputs.
2. If I were asked to sign a new contract which included a cut in pay despite performing reasonably well in the role, while more junior persons were given a pay rise for no apparent reason, I would have demanded an explanation. This is unlikely to happen in our workplace, as I said, because all performance indicators are measured objectively and a portfolio of EVIDENCE is assessed.
3. I would have ensured that I received a detailed explanation and then escalated the issue to ensure that senior leadership were made aware of it and to try prevent it from ever happening again. The second thing I would have done (in fact I would be doing this while writing to the managers) is looking for a job in a more professional set up, as I would quickly realise that the management in the current workplace is appalling and entirely unprofessional.
The players do not have this option - they represent the country.
