Ok let's start with the Classic bands I enjoy Metallica Iron Maiden Pantera Sabbath Slayer Megadeth Testament Carcass Death Judas Priest Motorhead Blind Guardian From here we move onto Scandinavian Melo Death Metal which is my fav genre (but I'll stuff a few other melo death bands from around the world in here Opeth Insonminum In Flames Dark Tranquility Arch Enemy Children of Bodom At the Gates Omnium Gatherum Soilwork Be'lakor (Melbournes own) Persefone The Halo Effect Nightwish Kreator I will just list Tool separately because they are that fkn good. Gateway drug metal bands/ Metal core/numetal etc here Linkin Park SOAD Limp Bizkit Incubus Lamb of God Mastodon Korn Slipknot Sepultura Rammstein Machine Head I am forgetting plenty more but here are my fav albums bands of the last 3 years because there are so many great metal bands right now that its ridiculous. Insomnium Haken Sermon Fires in the Distance Enforced Ne Obliviscaris Soen Crypta 1914 Kauan Stortregn Black Sites Aephanemer Wilderun The Halo Effect Aeternam High Command Disillusion Zeal & Ardor Darkher Countless Skies The Ocean Protest the Hero Polyphia (Instrumental) Plini (Instrumental) Ulcerate Obviously I am probably missing a whole heap that I love but these are front of mind for me. Outside of these I grew up listening to alternative rock and hard rock so happy to go into a tangent there too. My all time fav band is Pearl Jam. Fav metal band is probably Opeth/Tool. About 5 years ago I really got into classical music too (Bach, Bethoven, Mozart, Chopin etc) - just pure epicness. 10-29-2024, 10:44 PM
That's properly hard rock. How did you get into so many bands growing up when i assume accessibility was really low?

We used to have a radio station in SL called TNL and they played a lot of alternate rock. It also helped that the 90's were the alternate rock/grunge/hard rock mainstream era so this was what was on MTV and radio a lot of the time. From there I made friends with some guys who started a band in SL. We had a healthy scene of local bands starting up too. I was there at like the very first Stigmata (an OG sl metal band) gig for instance. We traded CD's and there were plenty of CD joints that sold pirated albums back in the day in Colombo. Then I met a friend who’s probably the best amateur guitarist I’ve ever known, and he was super into the classic metal bands—Metallica, Iron Maiden, and the like. From there, I all got hooked and kept going deeper down the rabbit hole. This guy had a brother (also a guitarist) living in Dubai. When he visited, they jammed together, playing the first few Metallica albums from start to finish in his room—one of the most epic moments I’ve experienced. Later, his brother sent over an MP3 compilation of Scandinavian bands and told us, "Guys, you have to hear this." It was Opeth, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, and In Flames. We’d never heard anything like it and were instantly hooked. 10-29-2024, 11:11 PM

Btw, if you like classical music and metallica you must like Orion by Metallica. That's one of my all time favourite songs. It's metal, but it's got a classical vibe to it. 11-02-2024, 09:32 AM

That’s quite hard. One Master of puppets Orion Welcome Home Fade to Black Blackened Something like that. Orion was written by Cliff thebassist who died when the tour bus crashed. Cliff was classically trained and into classical music and played piano etc. So it’s only natural that those influences made it onto Orion. He would regularly play Bach, Beethoven to the guys. Cliff was Kirk and James’s gateway into classical music and those influences. I can’t imagine what they would have been if not for Cliff’s influence in those early albums. Such a massive loss when it happened to the band and their music. 11-02-2024, 10:54 AM
