The Sri Lankan boys played their first matches at the Asian Games, in the Men’s singles category. Yasitha De Silva faced off against friendly rival Habib Hady of Lebanon. De Silva was tamed from the start, as a 6/2, 6/1 straight set victory takes Habib to the round of 32 Sharmal Dissanayake was faced with Maldivian Fazeel Abdullah in his first-round match. Dissanayake dominated from the get-go to an easy win of 6/0, 6/3 to advance in the tournament. Sharmal Dissanayake partnered Anjalika Kurera in the Mixed Doubles and faced an unfortunate defeat against Sanjar Fayziev and Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan. Saudi Arabia (3), India (2), Republic of Korea (1) and Sri Lanka (1) are the other NOCs to have won this event. Coming into the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games, the only athletics event Japan has won more gold medals in is the men's hammer throw (11). Japan has also won 10 gold medals in the men's 3000m steeplechase and the men's pole vault. Saudi Arabia won three of the last four men's 4x400m relay events, in 2002, 2006 and 2010. Japan is the reigning champion as the NOC was victorious at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games. Japan most recently won this event at successive editions of the Asian Games from 1978 to 1990, when it won four gold medals in a row. In 1962, the last time the Asian Games were held in Indonesia, India won the second of its two gold medals in the men's 4x400m relay. It won its first at the inaugural edition of the Asian Games in 1951, in New Delhi. India has also won a record seven silver medals in this event. Japan, Iraq and Malaysia have each won two.
