This was the match situation when Chamika walked in. It obviously was a tough ask. But what does he do thereafter?
END OF OVER 9 3 runs DG: 82/5CRR: 9.11 • RRR: 11.72 • Need 129 runs from 66b
Chamika Karunaratne 2 (5)
Najibullah Zadran 20 (12)
END OF OVER 10 3 runs
DG: 85/5CRR: 8.50 • RRR: 12.60 • Need 126 runs from 60b
Chamika Karunaratne 2 (9)
Najibullah Zadran 21 (14)
Zadran gets out
END OF OVER 11 10 runs • 1 wicket
DG: 95/6CRR: 8.63 • RRR: 12.88 • Need 116 runs from 54b
Lahiru Samarakoon 8 (3)
Chamika Karunaratne 4 (11)
Next over Samarakoon gets out. Chamika was 7(15) at that point.
He had 2 proper batsmen and Marchant de Lange (all rounder) to work with. But he went for a blockathon rather than at least rotating the strike. He starts going berserk when the RRR is 25.
Zadran was the only proper batsman, Samarakoon is a bowling all rounder, can whack the bowling on his day but not a proper batsman by any means. How on earth is de Lange an allrounder. Please check his records before you make statements like this. Do you think if Chamika went berserk from ball one, it would have made any difference to the end result. The bottom line is he ended up with SR of nearly 160 and the margin of defeat was only 23 runs purely because of his innings.
I think he should've rotated the strike more at the beginning and try to build an innings with Zadran and Samarakoon. is slow start prompted Zadran and Samarakoon to take too many chances. They probably would've still lose. But that how you attempt to win a game - not by bogging down in one end.
His hitting at the end is impressive; no doubt about that.
de Lange obviously is not a genuine allrounder; but he averages around 16 in FC. That's some one who is not completely useless. It's not the same as having Pradeep at the other end.
