There's a reason why people wanted Mahela to open back then. He was aggressive when he opened and used the fielding restrictions to his advantage.
Tharanga was never going to be very good due to his technical deficiencies (wasn't called "Sexy Edges" for no reason) and lack of aggression. He was not poor. Just not very good.
