They did have an affair btw (read the biographies). They didn't dwell on it, but it was implied - at least that there was a mutual fascination. Don't want to give away spoilers, but there were some sappy Bollywood type scenes (between other characters) that spoilt it a little for me - movie would've been far better without them. 08-06-2017, 07:53 PM

Watched Dunkirk, pretty great stuff! Nolan signature was all over it, and a very different war movie for once. I like how it portrayed war in such an unceremonious and unglamorous way; most war movies are heroic stuff but war for the most part if not all the time is about a continuous struggle for survival and just depressing. They hit on that point pretty well.
Also music was amazeballs, fits the theme perfectly and later I learned it was Hans Zimmer, no surprise there. 08-07-2017, 03:21 PM

No I watched it regular, the whole imax/70mm release was only for a couple of weeks it seems. By yesterday they only had regular screeninings, I guess to free up iMax for other newer movies. But it is a pretty great cinematic experience, photography/cinematography was tight.

It's more like a silent movie, a visual experience, you get the claustrophobic feel of being trapped, and liked the screen play as well, follows 3 different stories with different timelines. 08-07-2017, 11:27 PM
I saw a review somewhere that this actual fight and evacuation involved a fair amount of Indian fighters etc, and they are nowhere to be seen in the movie, but they did contribute in a meaningful way to the war and the movie ignores their heroism. Same goes for the conspicuous absence of Nazis in the movie, some critics have said it should have showed how horrific they were.
But imo that's pretty much missing the point of the movie. The movie is not about the heroics of war but quite the opposite. And it's not about any particular set of people, it's about how war really sucks, whether it's Nazis or not. I think the absence of Nazis was a masterstroke. 08-07-2017, 11:44 PM
Yea I saw this review - re: Indians by an Indian I think in the Guardian. I am surprised they were not shown if they contributed to the story. We are talking 400,000 people here.
Not criticizing the movie but wonder why they'd take that decision? Surely its not hard to cast a few brown extras? And maybe show a few in the larger group shots I have seen in the trailers. |
