https://www.ft.lk/sports/ICC-to-stick-with-percentage-of-points-won-in-next-World-Test-cycle/23-719248

The International Cricket Council on Monday said percentage of points won will decide the next World Test Championship finalists after the system was adopted in the COVID-hit inaugural event.

India and New Zealand will play the WTC final in Southampton starting Friday with the winner getting $ 1.6 million along with the Test mace. The runners-up will pocket $ 800,000 in the nine-team competition.

The ICC switched from the original system of total points to percentage of points won midway in the first cycle which was severely disrupted by the pandemic.

“We are going to stick with the percentage of points won method to ranked teams,” ICC acting chief executive Geoff Allardice told a select group of reporters in a video chat from Southampton.

“That percentage I think served us well in the second half of the competition. Now we can put a standardised number of points per Test match, it doesn’t matter whether it is a two-Test or a five-Test series.” He added: “The same number of points will be available for each match that’s played. Every team will be judged on the percentage of points and not on total.” The new method left Virat Kohli’s India needing to win the Test series away in Australia and the one at home against England to make the final.

India booked their place in the final after a 3-1 series win over England in March.

Kane Williamson’s side secured their spot when Australia’s tour of South Africa was postponed this year due to the pandemic. “One of the things that happened during this cycle was that it became evident that not everyone was going to complete their six series as a result of postponements,” he said.

“Because we have had teams playing uneven number of series, we made it a point to tweak the points system and make it as fair as possible.” Allardice said ICC’s aim to add more context to the five-day game has been a success after two years of Test series to determine the world’s top two teams.

“I think we were really pleased with the way it played out,” said Allardice.

“It was obvious that the interest in the series wasn’t around the two countries involved (in a bilateral series), it was coming from all over the cricket world. And to bring that sort of context it has been a real step forward.” India coach Ravi Shastri had suggested a three-match WTC final to decide the winners next time, but Allardice said a “one-match final is quite exciting”. Allardice also clarified that the rule on Covid replacements and concussion replacements will remain as it has been for the last 12 months. “COVID replacements will be available if a player is required to not continue in a match as a result of a COVID situation,” he said.

Cricket not part of LA28 initial list, but ICC says there is time

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has proposed 28 disciplines, including skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and cricket is not one of those. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said it is not fretting over the exclusion.

"Plenty time is still available for this (inclusion in the Olympics)," an ICC director told Cricbuzz on Friday (December 17) while an official of the world body said their ambition has not changed. "We are exactly where we expected to be, our Olympic ambitions have not changed."

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) member said the onus is on the ICC. "We have agreed to take part in the Olympics on the ICC's insistence. The onus is on them," the BCCI official remarked. Cricket's hopes of getting Olympic recognition got a lift when the BCCI formally adopted a resolution in April this year to participate in the Games. BCCI's consent was thought to be much needed given that it is the largest cricket market in the world.

The ICC sources contend that cricket was never going to be on the initial list. Its hopes lie with the host city's proposal. "The initial sport list is only for the sports which have appeared already. The host city process to pick additional sports will start next year. We will be part of that," an informed source, well conversant with the process, told this website. "This was entirely as expected."

An experienced hand in ICC's Olympic plans elaborated the point. "It is a two-stage process. This one is the first stage and the later one comes when LA28 can propose sports. Cricket was always part of Stage Two, probably by 2023. So there is nothing to worry about it right now."

The IOC statement after the December 9 meeting, when the initial list was finalised, seemed to conform the ICC hopes. The IOC has left a provision for the possibility for LA28 to propose additional sports in 2023 and it said in a statement. "The discipline review for existing Olympic disciplines, plus any potential new discipline to be proposed by the Olympic IFs (International Federations), will take place at the same time as the evaluation of potential new sports proposed by the OCOG (Organising Committee of Olympic Games), allowing for venue synergies and optimisations."

An ICC watcher from Canada, however, said it is not going to be easy for cricket. "ICC wasted precious time squabbling over a chairman and then even after a sub-committee was formed in December 2020, it didn't formally start work until just four months back. The ICC may pin their hopes on the final list of sports for LA28 in 2023 but don't expect other sports to just roll over and make way for cricket."

The ICC's Olympic committee is headed by its chairman Greg Barclay with independent director Indra Nooyi, Zimbabwe's Tavengwa Mukuhlani, Malaysia's Mahinda Vallipuram and USA's Parag Marathe as members.

Sri Lanka's Test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne has been nominated for the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year 2021 award.

India's spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, England captain Joe Root and New Zealand's all-rounder Kylie Jamieson have also been nominated for the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year award.

Dimuth Karunaratne – Sri Lanka

902 runs in 7 matches at 69.38 with 4 centuries

The year that was

The Sri Lankan Test skipper again led the charge for his side in the longest format. He showcased what a brilliant all-condition player he is and cemented his case for being the best opener in Test cricket right now.

A brilliant century in Johannesburg against South Africa, two centuries against Bangladesh in two matches in Pallekele, including a double ton, and a brilliant century against West Indies in Galle were some of the highlights from another stunning year for Karunaratne.

Sturdy at the top of the order, Karunaratne nullified various new-ball attacks throughout the year before unleashing the strokes once he had his eye in. With Sri Lankan cricket in a period of transition, the skipper will again be tasked with being the beacon of their batting order as a new era is ushered in.

Memorable performance

On a Wanderers pitch that was assisting the pacers and with the likes of Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi in the South African attack, Karunaratne played a brilliant attacking knock of 103 off 128 deliveries, showcasing his character.

Scoring runs was difficult on this pitch as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 157 in the first innings and South Africa could only reply with a score of 302. Karunaratne's knock in the second innings consisted of 19 boundaries but unfortunately, he failed to get any support from the other end as the visitors were skittled out for 211.

That Karunaratne scored almost half the runs for his side and no other batter even managed to reach a score of 40 further highlighted the classy nature of his ton.

South Africa would eventually seal a 10-wicket victory, but Karunaratne's knock will be spoken of for ages.

https://www.newswire.lk/2022/01/07/changes-to-t20i-cricket-playing-conditions-come-into-effect/

ICC Statement

An in-match penalty for slow over rates in men’s and women’s Twenty20 Internationals comes into effect this month, with the updated playing conditions also providing for an optional drinks interval midway through the innings in bilateral T20 international cricket.

The over rate regulations are captured in clause 13.8 of the playing conditions (here), which stipulate that a fielding side must be in position to bowl the first ball of the final over of the innings by the scheduled or rescheduled time for the end of the innings. If they are not in such a position, one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings.

The change was recommended by the ICC Cricket Committee, which regularly discusses ways to improve the pace of play in all formats, after considering reports on the effectiveness of a similar regulation that was included in the playing conditions for the Hundred competition conducted by the ECB.

The in-match penalties are in addition to the sanctions for slow over rate outlined in Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

In another change, an optional drinks break of two minutes and thirty seconds may be taken at the mid-point of each innings subject to agreement between Members at the start of each series.

The first men’s match to be played under the new playing conditions will be the one-off tie between the West Indies and Ireland at the Sabina Park in Jamaica on 16 January while the first T20I of the three-match series between South Africa and the West Indies in Centurion on 18 January will be the first women’s match played under the new playing conditions.
