Establishing Forum Definitions of Good, Great, Average etc - mugatiya - 03-07-2023

Kind of a random thread but would be keen to put together some general definitions around how we bracket players into a category.

I think the loose definitions (borrowed) are

All-time great: Among the very best of all time, and would fit into an all-time team. Eg: Bradman, Tendulkar, Lara, Marshall, Murali and Imran. I think there's only about a max of 50 of these. Maybe over time a new player gets in but this is rarified air that is being breathed.

Great: Among the best players from their country, with consistently excellent performances over many years. Dravid, De Silva, Walsh, Vaas

World-class: Very good players who have had impressive performances, but not consistently enough to be considered greats. Eg

Good: Solid players who are important members of their team and have impressive performances, but are not quite at the same level as the very best.

Average: Decent players who can justify their place in the team, but are not standout performers.

Who would you consider World Class but not great from SL ?

Mathews? Marvan?

I think Sanga is a good shout for ATG imo, Mahela a great and so on is how I've always seen those 2.

You have already made it complicated by a "borderline" tag. They are either world class or great.

It will be never ending if we keep doing that. Why is that you want everything to get so complicated LOL.
