Mahela and those ‘bloodless coups’ by Rex Clementine - Black_Hawk - 07-05-2017

Former captain Mahela Jayawardene yesterday dismissed as baseless a gossip website claim that his agent controlled the affairs of the national cricket team. Ironically, it was only last week that Mahela fully backed speedster Lasith Malinga, who attacked Minister of Sports via a gossip website. Mahela in fact posted the video of the gossip website in his twitter account, saying, ‘This is why I like this guy (Malinga)’.

Cricket means so much for Sri Lankans and big names associated with the game should be able to take criticism. Sadly, Mahela has failed to do so. But, he and his agent stand accused of having used media institutions to silence their opponents over the years.

Mahela was Captain when Sri Lanka hosted Pakistan at Pallekele in 2013. Chasing a target of 271 in 71 overs, Sri Lanka were well set at 195 for four after 62 overs. Sri Lanka needed 76 runs in nine over to win the Test match at that stage. On strike was world’s best batsman Kumar Sangakkara unbeaten on 74. The big hitting Angelo Mathews was at the other end. Mahela always speaks of playing the Sri Lankan brand of cricket which is being aggressive and not being afraid to play your shots. However, in that instance, instead of going for the target Mahela opted for a hearty handshake with Misbah-ul-Haq and closed shop. The fans were denied an exciting finish as the game ended in a draw. Not the kind of captaincy that we expected of Mahela.

At the post match media briefing, Mahela was grilled by journalists on his controversial decision.

The following day he used a website to call the hectoring scribes ‘armchair critics’.

The same ‘mud site’ attacked one of the most loyal servants of Sri Lankan cricket – Chaminda Vaas.

In 2005, the vice-captaincy of the national team was taken from Mahela and given to Vaas, who had by then had represented the national team for over a decade. He had also been a member of Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning squad.

Besides managing players, Mahela’s agent functioned as a cricket writer. There was a conflict of interest but Mahela did not care.

The agent used the aforesaid website to cast aspersions on Vaas, who, he claimed, had sought the intervention of politicians to secure the vice captaincy.

Vaas had to resign in the end and chose to suffer in silence. It was a bloodless coup!

In 2009, during the ICC World T-20 in England, six Sri Lankan players came under ICC investigation for their alleged involvement with an Indian model in a London nightclub.

Leading British broadsheet, The Guardian, however, a few months later highlighted only one player, claiming that he was involved in match fixing!

The ICC has a strict policy of not commenting on its match fixing investigations, but an investigation we conducted made a stunning revelation. Under interrogation by the ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit officers, the six players first denied having gone out with the model to the London night club. Then the officers showed the players video evidence obtained from the night club. They were stunned. They were warned that the model was being used by bookies as a honey trap. Watch your steps boys was the message from the ICC. The case was closed.

So, why did The Guardian name only one player as a match fixer? Others were Charlie’s brats! The Guardian cricket journalist who wrote the story is a business partner of Mahela’s agent.

Let Mahela be urged to do unto others as he would have them do unto him.

Didn't pay a lot of attention to these stories as I said the other day. Senior players and cricket administration should have been held accountable if this guy was a harmful element to the team set up. Clearly not just a player agent if there's any truth in this.

RE: Mahela and those ‘bloodless coups’ by Rex Clementine - Bada - 07-05-2017

I remember Mahela's comments. What was the website?

Friendship between Mahela, Sanga and Austin is well documented. Sanga even thanked him in his farewell speech while saying Austin was the godfather of his children. Whether they had any shady dealings is a different matter.

Sanath thoththa babada.? How is PJ is using language when it comes to Sanath  Rolleyes

Sanath not agreeing to 10% to his agent can be understandable. They say he is damn stingy.  Big Grin  Sandra was going to demand huge some for the divorce. Because of that demand he has to abandon the divorce and Maleeka Sirisena. This is what I have heard.

Read properly without being an idiot. I said OTHERS including Sanath was coxed. I could have easily left Sanath's name out if this I wanted to. Sanath and Dilshan both did not agree to pay commission because Austin didn't deserve to get it because their IPL contracts had already being secured in the 2nd year. Sanath paid the commission in the first year because Austin as his manager helped to get the contract.

Austin came to SL to write some articles and some how became involved with Cricinfo. Then he befriended Mahela....I don't want to go in to detail about it because it could involve Mahela's private life......I MUST say it's nothing bad on Mahela's part but still personal. Of course then Sanga joined as Mahela's best friend and these two were the first clients of Austin. Then others including Sanath were coxed  in to being his clients. Later on just before the 2nd season of IPL Sanath fell out with Austin because he asked Sanath  for his 10% commission. Sanath refused because he already had a contract with MI and it was not something Austin got for him. The same thing happened with Dilshan which he mentioned after he retired without actually naming Austin. That said, players have also benefited by being Austin clients....getting bat contracts etc. All that is fine but it came to a point where he could get players to be clients by promising a spot in the team using senior players who had the clout as captains etc. It's in that scenario, he has been able to get the majority of players to be his clients. It's said he is using the current captain for the same purpose now. Captain has a say in selections what ever others might say, that's truth. The plight of Dhananjaya de Silva could be a case in point.....which needs  to be further verified.

This is only the tip of the iceberg......that's for sure.

It is well known that before he became a player agent Austin was managing the Red Dot Tour company, of which Christina Sirisena (Mahela's wife) was an employee.  Nothing sensational or harmful.

Since you have said it.......who got her that job......was it the reason Mahela was under obligation to Austin. I really dont like to talk about things that are personal.....I will leave it at that.

All you do is move in shadows and corners and talk about the the "real truth" without ever saying anything.

What is sooo special about the gossip lanka article? All it does is talk about Austin in the same way as others have in the past..what's new in it? Please explain.

Don't make this ANOTHER one of your -  you vs us thing. If Austin is indeed guilty of everything levelled at him then it a serious issue. I just don't understand why we have to hide behind corners when speaking about it.

I want to know the truth. But no one is willing to tell me what they suppsoedely know. This is not player related so why can't you expose Austin wrt what you know about him? According to you it's about to happen anyway?

I have seen no proof other than people just posting stuff. So I am happy to say I can't imagine a breakdown in the system of this magnitude because it seems impossible. Could deals have been done? Has Austin profited from our players. **** yea. Anything wrong with that? Then I'd shudder what you'd think of football agents who milk money and control a countless number of players across europe.

I am happy to be wrong if it means we know the truth rather than the gossip that has been there for the last 5-10 years?

If he's such a cancer for SL cricket why the hell can't people like Rex or Andrew expose him once and for all? Because won't this be a massive break in news for any publication? It would upend the whole system

That is a HUGE scoop in the sports context...

You keep alluding to what will happen in the "future". The future has been coming for years...still waiting...

How can you say its not player related when Austin is the agent for the majority of players. I don't have a problem with him being the agent and/or the players benefiting from his contacts. My problem is he has been manipulative in several fronts by using senior players and/or vice versa. I can't expose him to the full in a public forum because there are names of current players involved and there are aspects of their private lives involved as well.

You wanted something from Rex...here it is today's Island newspaper. Things are coming out one by one.

http://island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=167771

Didn't i mention two names at the begining of this convo? Roshan and Rex. Lol Roshan probably saw twitter replies from Mahela and called Rex.

Can we ask andrew to write about Roshan having two votes from Ragama CC to SLC selections while managing players. That's no conflic of interest to Rex. Joker. Salli denawanam lideth paniy.

Anyway what does this say?

1 Describes coulpe of match situations.
2 Ask us coupld of question without presenring solid connection to those scenarios
3 have a rant at Austin saying he influence management without facts
4 and then says couple of actual facts about how he managed SL mewspaper amd guardian media(which is Rex angry about because he was not paid i guess)

Doesn't proove anything. One of those 'tricking people into false ideas' article..

RE: Ford didn’t agree to certain SLC policies - Gurusinha - criccontent - 07-05-2017

Surely Christina must be getting peanuts from Red Dot tours compared to what Mahela was earning from playing cricket. Is that a big deal.?

Under obligation to Austin.?????? What is wrong if Mahela thinks he is the best manager he can have and select him.

People like Mahela and Sanga command a lot of love and respect in SL but interesting how much the wider public don't know.
It's also interesting how I can't find Austin's Management company online to find the list of players he manages. How did one man, a foreigner too, end-up with so much power?

Very good question BH...you can give the credit for that to Sanga & Mahela.

RE: Mahela and those ‘bloodless coups’ by Rex Clementine - Real Sanga - 07-05-2017

Roshan wants best players to him.
Greeds like Dilly, Sana went for cheaper man with two votes for SLC having some power too.
Rex is a money whore.

Out of Roshan and Austin, Roshan is way more harmful in each and evey way to SL cricket. He is angry he can't control overseas media as well as Austin, so he uses his local thugs like Rex to create stories. He is angry he could't pay guardian guy enough that day.

Disagreements of Dilly Sana with Sanga helps this cause.

Roshan with two votes hv clear say in selection if needs. Austin never did. But he was succesful managing players outside of cricketing context and has bigger say globaly like in media. Roshan Is jealous.

If they ban Austin, Roshan gonna have most of the national players as well as two votes for SLC election. God help SL.

Know your facts please. Christina worked at Red Dot before she got married to Mahela, when she was his girl friend. She no longer works there, left long time back.

Austin was never a manager or a player agent before.......his first clients were Mahela and Sanga.
