Is the system… working ?

The system is obviously not working. We were just lucky to unearth Nissanka and Kamindu, as well as Asitha. Those 3 are the only world class all format players at the moment. Then you have Asalanka who can become a great ODI player.

That too after nearly 10 years of suffering from the loss of the previous generation.

Since around 2000, few very good players have made the national team despite the system being horrible. System needs a huge change with the school and club going through a complete overhaul to make it more competitive and quality over quantity being the priority. Until then, few youngsters doing well is certainly not due to the system working.

Or has SL cricket now tapped into a new rich vein of talent like we did during the golden era.

Are you seriously asking this Mugs. We’ve talked about how it’s dysfunctional for the last 10 years. Could be so much better and more competitive. Facilities also need upgrading. Also not sure whether players have adequate dietetic advice.

Obviously I’m not saying the system is what it should be at all. You should know that from my post history.

But lately it seems the current system has been able to float up some decent players. Or maybe the standout players are starting to really stand out with averages of 60+ etc so maybe it’s been obvious and they would have risen to the top regardless of the system.

I don’t think it’s the system but looks like we’ve been lucky to get some really talented players coming through . The “system “ still has issues. Best example is selecting Milan for the 2nd test and bowling him only for 2 overs so far across 2 innings. It is a small example but can highlight how our selectors / system can screw up things.
On the other hand , these young players are getting more opportunities these days with A team and under 19 team tours and also the NSL. So in a way the system does work to a certain extent.

This is the sort of response I was hoping for not obvious and boring - the system doesn’t work type responses.

I think the Milan issue is more of a selection problem more so than a system getting it wrong issue.

The LPL and A and u19 exposure is helping a lot for sure.

I wonder if we can pull any data for number of matches by year in the last 5 years or so separately for A and U19? Bada ?

Hoping it’s trending up with more matches being played.

I don't think the system is working very well, however it is functional, and if an individual is determined the system is designed as such you can succeed without it . We are just lucky we have unearthed some highly determined/motivated individuals lately, who can by pass the system.

The most glaring defect in the system is seen, when we look at our t20 side. Make no mistake, despite our significant improvement, our t20 side is no where near the international standard required. System can make a lot of changes to improve in that area, which they have not been doing and we constantly fail in the t20 arena.

The T20 side is a good example. What specifically would you fix in the system to help with that? We have the LPL which was implemented to address this issue. What would you improve about it ?

And what else can SLC do in your opinion on this specific topic ?

I'm not sure exactly what we are calling "the system".

I think it's all about that U19 group from 2016/17 clicking. Asalanka was expected to be a proper all-format player, but he has underachieved in FC cricket. If the system (senior domestic cricket?) worked, he should be an established Test batter by now.

The main domestic tournament SL has now (NSL) is definitely better than club cricket, but SL cricket isn't anywhere near full potential since it hasn't gone provincial for real.

Kamindu is an exceptional case. Leave him aside.

I remember Shanaka talking about the importance of a power hitting coach at a presser. Of course, SLC didn't hire one. Maybe start from there at the national team level.

There should be a mechanism to identify T20 players when they are very young and develop them. I heard someone say that AUS teenagers have separate T20 competitions in school cricket. They need to set up something like that focused solely on T20 cricket.

The structure is basically the domestic set up and pathways to the national team.
