New SL Coach thread (version 5764)

Skill coaches are more important as they help to fine-tune certain aspects at this level.

SL has been grooming local coaches for a while. Can easily give the head coach position to one of them.

If you want to hire a foreign coach, get someone intelligent who can do things SL guys can't do. For example, a guy who can have a serious say in picking the best squad/playing XI. SL past players/selectors have been pathetic at this for a long time. Someone who can identify players you need for different formats and has the ability to clearly define roles within the team, and then demand selectors to come up with players who can play those roles instead of going circles with the same old failures. The kind of person who would not be OK with taking players like Chandimal, Sadeera and DDS to T20 WCs. Of course, no head coach can make SL a really good team, but they can work on the areas I have mentioned.

I don't see the point of hiring another foreign guy to do the usual man management job. There are a few locals who can do this. The language barrier is definitely a problem. I have heard enough stories from past players about how Arjuna, Aravinda, Sanga and Mahela had to explain things to their team mates because they couldn't understand what the foreign coaches were saying.

I don't think the foreign coaches are focusing on man management tasks. The head coach's role should be tactical, supported by his staff with technical assistance where players need to improve.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anyone local who can handle the aspects you’ve highlighted. To do those parts well, one must be abreast of the latest technical, scientific, and data-backed theories that apply to each format. This requires someone who can use and interpret data effectively, incorporating it into the decision-making process. They need to understand matchups and the technical requirements of players for each format and be able to spot talent quickly.

Who in Sri Lanka has this knowledge? In my opinion, no one apart from Mahela.

The man management part is something the head coach can handle, but it doesn't need to be his primary role. He can easily hire a local coach to communicate his messages clearly and provide support.

I am not opposed to a local coach, but I don't think anyone in Sri Lanka possesses the skills you are referring to, other than Mahela.

So, in my opinion, Mahela is the only viable local candidate.

The coach needs to request the data he needs for the decision-making process; hence the criteria required for each format (as you highlighted). Surely there are data analysts who can abstract and interpret the relevant data required.

My opinion at this point in time, the head coach should be local and foreigners can be recruited as specialist coaches.

No point talking about Mahela because he is not ready to take up a full-time role.

I agree that anyone can ask for data, but knowing the right questions to ask comes with experience—a skill that can certainly be learned.

At a minimum, the coach should have recent experience either coaching a team or being part of a coaching staff and should be able to step into a leadership role.

Whether the coach is local or foreign doesn't matter to me, as long as they meet certain criteria.

My main issue is that, aside from Mahela, I don’t know which local candidates would meet these criteria. If we're suggesting local options, we should have a clear idea of at least the top five candidates.

I suppose Avishka is one option. Who else?

This is the way to go.........not saying Sanath should be the head coach but getting down specialist coaches is a good move.

Zubin Bharucha, the high-performance director for IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, will soon arrive to conduct a batting master class for a group of national cricketers ahead of their white-ball series against India. The sessions will take place from July 18 to 26 at the Khettarama High Performance Centre (HPC).

Bharucha was recommended by former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, who currently serves as the director of cricket and head coach of Rajasthan Royals, following a request from Sanath Jayasuriya–the current consultant coach, who will take over the national team as head coach in the interim during the Indian and England series.

Bharucha and the Rajasthan Royals academy have introduced a method called sequenced training, focused on enhancing adaptability. This involves four throwers positioned about 15 feet from the batter, each with specific roles such as supplying the flick, cut, pull, and drive. Behind them are feeders with sidearms. The training session comprises four throwers, four sidearms, four spinners and four fast bowlers, creating 16 variables that challenge a player with different shots on both sides. Bharucha emphasised the importance of repetition to refine the skills.

“He comes highly recommended by Kumar, and we expect to benefit greatly from his expertise in this brief period. He is set to bring in four specialist throw-down experts, and we will provide additional facilities like balls and net bowlers,” a source familiar with the details revealed.

Bharucha has requested for 150 new white balls, four side pitches, centre wicket for training and around 30 fast-bowlers, spinners, sidearm specialists to conduct his programme at Kettarama. SSC will also be reserved for centre-wicket training along with side wickets during this period.

Bharucha, a former Mumbai batsman, is known for pushing players the extra mile in training to elevate their performance. He played a key role in the development of Indian batters Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jurel reportedly underwent a monumental practice session, batting for 140 overs in a day before his Test debut earlier this year against England, mirroring Jaiswal’s rigorous training. Jaiswal, who scored a double-century on his Test debut and was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team last month, credited Bharucha for his success.
