Let's dig into this. Who are some up-and-coming assistant coaches or otherwise who might be worth looking into?
Local coaches won't work IMO. Players don't respect them unless their last name is Sangakkara or Jayawardene Burned bridges with Hathuru Best bet is a Saffer / Pom or an Aussie What about S Law? 06-28-2024, 03:23 AM

There are local coaches who players will respect if they are allowed a free hand. Foreigners as head coach won't work IMO due to language barrier etc. I am for foreigners as specialist coaches, ex: power hitting coach.
Example of a local coach who has got of respect - Upul Chandana. 06-28-2024, 03:26 AM

We have invested so much in foreign coaches now, and I think with the advancement of technology, local or foreign they all know and use similar coaching methods. There is no foreign knowledge to gather as per say anymore. I think those new young players who come to the side, who can' speak English well are afraid to approach these foreign coaches as per past interviews from players, so I would like a local coach, even someone like Avishka Gunawardena is fine. Then get vaasy, herath, chandana and some foreign physiotherapist and get the ball rolling At the end coaches are not going to do much looking at the current situation in Sri Lanka. What we really need is less clubs, less dilution of talent and more opportunities for players to play with better teams and stronger competition. So should not waste too much time on this, and move to the areas that really need addressing. However knowing Sri Lanka, they would go for another foreign coach, who will give the most wonderful powerpoint presentation and amaze the SLC board, but when you go the ground none of that will be practical. 06-28-2024, 03:33 AM
Stuart Law is currently head coach of the USA team. He has coached several teams including SL but I don't think was successful with any of them.

I think the coach should be a former County couch who has been upto date with current technology and coaching methods. I'd like to see some guy come in and give assignments to say Chameera and Theekshana to work on their batting defense and strike rotating ability so they can hold their own wicket and give strike to the other batter. I'd like to see someone work with DDS to improve his power game. I'd like to see implementation of technology such as spin reader used at youth trials to identify young spin talent. I'd like to see a coach bring in speed specialist that can work with youth to improve speed of the next generation. Ideally this is what Toom Moody is supposed to be doing lol. 06-28-2024, 05:06 AM

Coaches From 1996 to 2015 didn't have a difficult time because SL had star players who performed to expectations and beyond. Whatmore, Bayliss and Moody were the best, understanding our players and guiding them to do their best. Since 2015, there has been so many coaches but none has been able to get the best out of the team. On the other hand, we haven't had star players who others could look up to. Can't blame the coaches too much because it's so little they can do regarding technique etc at the top level. Players themselves should have commitment, dedication and willingness to work hard.
