Sixteen-year-old Naseem Shah's participation in the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa early next year is not certain yet, with the senior team management not in favour of releasing him for age-group cricket. The junior team management, understandably, wants the star fast bowler freed up for the World Cup, as originally planned.

Naseem Shah, the 16-year-old pacer from Pakistan, has been withdrawn from the upcoming ICC Under 19 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Tuesday (December 31). The PCB stated it had taken a pragmatic approach by deciding to withdraw Shah, who has already made an impact in senior men's cricket, having played three Tests with a five-wicket haul also to his name.
The junior selection panel, headed by Saleem Jaffar, has named Mohammad Wasim Jnr. of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Shah's replacement. Wasim Jnr. bagged three wickets apiece in the youth Asia Cup and the tour of South Africa while he also picked up seven wickets during the Sri Lanka tour. "The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is a stepping stone for future stars and a platform for budding youngsters to graduate to international cricket. Naseem has recently broken that glass ceiling and has established his credentials as an international cricketer," PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said. "As such, the PCB has taken a pragmatic approach and decided to withdraw him from next year's competition to provide this opportunity to another promising cricketer so that he can show his mettle and potential at a global stage. "This should not deter Pakistan's chances at next year's ICC U19 Cricket World Cup as the selectors have picked a side that is experienced and bubbling with confidence to perform strongly. "Naseem will now remain in Pakistan and continue to work on his skills under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Waqar Younis. Furthermore, he will remain available for the home series against Bangladesh," Wasim Khan added. Pakistan, who were the champions of the 2004 and 2006 editions of the Under-19 World Cup, are placed alongside Scotland, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in Group C of the 16-team event. Their opening game of the tournament is against Scotland on January 19. https://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/111564/naseem-shah-withdrawn-from-pakistan-u19-world-cup-squad 01-01-2020, 11:55 AM

Sri Lanka squad has been announced.
http://www.thepapare.com/sri-lanka-u19-squad-for-2020-u19-cricket-world-cup-announced/ Sri Lanka U19 squad Nipun Dhananjaya ©, Kamil Mishara, Navod Paranawithana, Ahan Wickramasinghe, Ravindu de Silva, Sonal Dinusha, Mohamed Shamaz, Thaveesha Abhishek, Chamindu Wijesinghe, Ashain Daniel, Dilum Sudeera, Dilshan Madushanka, Amshi de Silva, Kavindu Nadeeshan, Matheesha Pathirana Coach – Hashan Tillakaratne, Manager– Farveez Maharoof The 15-member Sri Lanka U19 squad for the upcoming U19 ICC World Cup 2020 which will commence on 17th January in South Africa was released to the media by Sri Lanka Cricket. The squad will be led by Nipun Dhananjaya from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, while the trio who weren’t a part of the Bangladesh tour due to disciplinary issues, Kamil Mishara, Ahan Wickramasinghe and Ashian Daniel have also been selected after their successful outing in the Caribbean. The left arm seamer from Hungama Vijayaba College, Dilshan Madushanka will make a return to the squad after his omission from the Youth squad that traveled to the Caribbean tour due an injury. Young pace sensation, Matheesha Pathirana from Trinity College, who made the headlines for his Malinga-like Slingy action has also been added to the squad. The unlucky ones to miss the U19 World Cup 2020 out of the squad that toured the Caribbean are Yasiru Rodrigo (S Thomas’ College) and Naveen Fernando (Maris Stella College) Apart from those additions to the pace battery, the inclusion of top order batsman Thaveesha Abhishek (Richmond College) and wicket keeper Mohamed Shamaz (Zahira College) will strengthen Sri Lanka’s batting unit which already includes the likes of Ravindu Rashantha and Navod Paranavithana. Unfortunately, Josephian all-rounder Lakshan Gamage and injured Chamindu Wickramasinghe have been ruled out. In – Dilshan Madushanka, Thaveesha Abhishek, Mohamed Shamaz, Matheesha Pathirana Out – Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Yasiru Rodrigo, Lakshan Gamage, Naveen Fernando Apart from Madushanka and Pathirana, Sri Lanka’s fast bowling unit will be bolstered by the presence of Amshi de Silva from Richmond College and the experienced all-rounder from Nalanda College, Chamindu Wijesinghe. These four players will have to create a major impact if Sri Lanka are to make a statement in the World Cup on seamer-friendly South African pitches. Wrist spinner Kavindu Nadeeshan who was a deadly sight for young West Indies and English batsmen in the Caribbean tour will join the ‘spin gang’ with Sonal Dinusha, Dilum Sudeera and Ashain Daniel. Sri Lanka U19s will compete from Group A in the U19 World Cup where they will have to overcome defending champions India, Japan (who are making their debut appearance in a World Cup tournament) and New Zealand in the group stage. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka have not won an U19 World Cup so far. Since 1988, their best performance was in 2000, where they finished as runners-up in the tournament going down to India in the final at SSC under the captaincy of Malintha Gajanayaka. 01-07-2020, 02:35 AM

we have not been producing the best of performance in these championships for some time. The best performance I remember was 10 years back in 2010 when we got to the SFs under Chathura Pieris' captaincy that team had Dhanushka, Bhanuka, Kithruwan etc. I think in 2016 too we managed to play a SF under Asalanka.
Hopefully this time we will have the strength to succeed and win the WC Kusal Mendis~the almighty, set to return on the 31st Jul 2022

SL didn't do much on the way to the SF in 2016. It was a short format. They beat two minnows, then ENG in the QF, but lost to all 3 major Asian sides in a tournament played in Bangladesh. 2010 wasn't very different. Can't remember beating 2 or 3 good teams. There was that one game where they dominated SA. That was probably the QF. Obviously some individual brilliance was there.
