These comparisons are pointless now. That was a different era. ODI cricket has changed. Averages have gone up. Also, those two didn't always bat in the top 4 early on. Mendis has an unusually high percentage of single digit scores.

Comparisons from different eras is pointless but even if you compare, Mahela and Sanga averaged in the mid thirties in positions they batted most in the early part of their careers. Mendis averages just 29 in positions 3/4 where he has batted most in 68 ODI innings. Just one hundred and 15 fifties which is well below par for a top order batsman.

Avishka is 21 now. You can make major changes to your technique relatively easily at this age. Becomes a lot harder later on. Best to give him an extended run instead of having him rot in our domestic system. And technique isn't everything - there are many players who have more than made up for flawed techniques with natural ability: Jayasuriya, Sehwag, Amla, Majid Khan to name a few.

Mendis should be dropped from ODIs. No excuses for his performance: he's had an extended run and it's been abysmal.

Just give him extended run properly like K.Mendis got. Opposition will slowly start figuring him out and then the real test begins. Like Michael Holding said, if this was WI, they will give a good talent 2 year run. Do the same and they drop them. Just don't bring wastemans like Jeevan or Pathirana. Shehan is not an international player at all, but unfortunately he has been performing well and it is right that he is given few matches consistently. Pretty sure he will fail, then toss him and never bring back.

Mahela was averaging 50 in Test pretty much from the start. K. Mendis has become more radical with his shot selection, he is not focused as it seems. Maybe he has been figured out. How many SL talents had initially impressed everyone and just fell off ? Chandimal, 3D, Tharanga.....maybe he just got figuredout. When players starts getting noticed, teams will try to figure them out. That day will come to Avishka as well but hoping Avishka adapts and excel through. We don't want another Crapu.
